Partner Jessica Seares led a panel on Georgia’s tort reform at the Gavel’s National Conference in Ft. Lauderdale in January. Passed by one vote by the legislature and signed into law on April 21, 2025, Senate Bill 68 and Senate Bill 69 provide the most sweeping and significant changes to tort law in Georgia since the 2005. Tort reform aims to reduce frivolous lawsuits, lower liability insurance costs, prevent excess damages awards, and level the playing field between plaintiffs and defendants, promoting a more stable legal environment. While the new laws focus on many areas, the biggest changes will to premises law and the admissibility of evidence revealing the cost of care and the relationship between plaintiffs, providers and lawyers.
